Police Commissioner Sanjeev Panda
The Commissionerate Police on Friday busted a bike-lifting racket and arrested six persons involved in the bike theft and two others for buying stolen two-wheelers.
According to a source, acting on a tip-off, Badagada Police raided the place and arrested the six accused. The cops seized as many as 31 stolen bikes from them. After lifting the bikes, they would hide them in places in the Konark area. Later, they would sell them away.
Informing about the modus operandi of the racket, Police Commissioner Sanjeev Panda said, “The members of the gang were lifting bikes mainly from the court area, in front of Utkal Galleria mall and the daily market near Ravi talkies area.”
The Police Commissioner informed they were targeting Hero motorcycles.
“They mainly focused on Hero motorcycles as the handle lock of these bikes was easy to break for them. They would have master keys. The bikes left in the parking with only handle lock were sitting duck for the racket,” he said.
“To avoid arrest, one of the accused would habitually take shelter in a de-addiction centre for some time and then become active once again,” he added.
A detailed probe is underway.
