The Rairakhol police in Sambalpur district have busted a gang involved in the theft of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from tankers and arrested three persons in this connection.

According to sources, the trio had been stealing LPG while the cooking fuel was being transported in heavy vehicles. They would clandestinely transfer the LPG from tankers to small containers as well as cylinders.

The trio used some machines to unload gas from the tankers and transfer it into small tankers.

They used to carry out the illegal activities in a very risky manner in the backside of a roadside eatery (dhaba) near Bamur along National Highway 55, police said.

Prasanta Meher, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Rairakhol said, “They had been stealing LPG from tankers and transport them to different illegal bottling plants in Raipur, Hyderabad and Mumbai.”

He said further inquiry is underway into the matter.
