A sub-inspector and a female assistant sub-inspector (ASI) were injured when a mob of villagers attacked them at Sirola village under Tirtol Police limits of Jagatsinghpur district on Saturday. 

Police arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the attack. 

According to the police, a sub-inspector and a female assistant sub-inspector had gone to Sirola village to arrest an accused involved in an old case. Before they could understand anything, the villagers allegedly ganged up against them and started attacking them. 

Later, the cops were rescued and the female ASI, who was critically injured, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Then she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. 

When contacted, Tirtol SDPO, Prashant Majhi said over the phone, “Some villagers had attacked the family members of a villager named Prasanna Lenka. They had also ransacked the furniture in his house before setting them on fire. It was when a police team went to the village to arrest the accused involved in the case, the villagers attacked. In the attack, a lady officer suffered a critical head injury.”

A detailed investigation is underway, the police said.
