In a shocking incident, a former samiti member of Dighi panchayat under Kamakhyanagar police limits in Dhenkanal district was brutally beaten to death over suspected enmity late Sunday night.

The deceased has been identified as Sarbeswar Rout. Even as the exact reason behind the brutal murder is yet to be ascertained, the family members suspect political rivalry.

On the other hand, reports suggest that the accused had a previous enmity with Rout over contract works and killed him in a pre-planned murder.

Swinging into action, police detained five people in this connection and launched a probe. Based on a complaint by the deceased’s son, a case of murder has been registered in this connection.

According to sources, Rout had been to his cashew orchard Sunday evening. He was returning home from the orchard when the miscreants attacked him with swords and other sharp-edged weapons.

They fled after leaving him in critical condition. He was being rushed to the local hospital when he succumbed to the injuries.

The five detainees belong to the same village and had a tiff with Rout. Family members demanded stringent action against the culprits.
