The police recovered Rs 14.9 lakh cash during a raid at the house of Raja Karan, husband of former BJD corporator Ranjita Karan, in Kalyannagar area of Cuttack on Saturday.

Raja was arrested on Friday on charges of duping people of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of providing them houses constructed under the government’s EWS scheme at Andarpur in Cuttack. He was produced in a court on Saturday. 

Police said cases of cheating over 80 people to the tune of lakhs of rupees have been pending against Raja at different police stations. 

Briefing media on Saturday, ACP, Zone-6 of Cuttack, Amarendra Panda said Raja had taken lakhs of rupees from people to allot the houses that are constructed under EWS scheme. 

“He had even handed over such houses to around 33 people illegally. He had given them forged documents along with notary affidavits. Now that cash amounting to Rs 14.9 lakh has been recovered from his house, we will further investigate to find out if he has deposited any more money in banks and inform the court,” Panda said.
