Patia in Bhubaneswar woke up to a sensational news on Saturday morning after a youth, working at Blue Orchid Kalyan Mandap in the area under Infocity Police limits, was found hanging in a room.

It is suspected that the youth might have died by suicide due to financial strains ostensibly caused by betting heavily on online games.

The deceased was identified by the police as Prakash Bal. A (suicide) note which was recovered from the room mentioned financial crisis as the cause behind the extreme step, informed police.

However, the family of the deceased refuted the possibility of suicide and alleged that he had been killed over money. The deceased’s brother Bikash Bal said, “He was upset for quite some time. He told me about his financial problems when he last came home. He asked me for Rs 1 lakh saying he had been receiving threats to pay back the money he owed to others.”

Bikash alleged that the handwriting in the suicide note does not match with Prakash’s and the death should be investigated thoroughly.

His mother who could not hold back his tears after seeing the lifeless body of his son and said, “My son has been murdered for money. He could not repay the debt, so they killed him.”

The Manager at the Mandap, Abhishek Khemka said, “Prakash used to play online games regularly. He was so addicted to it. I think he might have placed bets on these games and lost the money.”

ACP of Zone-6 of the Commissionerate Police, Prakash Chandra Pal said, “The suicide note does not mention anything about playing of online games. His mobile phone will be sent for forensic analysis for corroboration of the allegations.”

Though the suicide note mentions financial crisis as the cause of his suicide, we have registered a case of murder following the allegations made by the deceased’s family members, Pal added.
