After the death of gangster SK Hyder in a police encounter in Odisha, the Kendrapara district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in Kendrapara town and four panchayats- Barimul, Kapaleswar, Gulnagar and Jamdhar- to prevent any untoward incident.

The restrictions will continue in these areas for seven days, till July 30 (11 AM). During this period, gathering of more than five persons is not allowed. Only poultry, vegetables and grocery shops are allowed to open during this period, but only from 7 AM to 11 AM.

Gangster Hyder, who was involved in gang wars in the district, succumbed to bullet injuries yesterday. He was shot at by a jail escort team when he allegedly tried to flee from custody while being shifted from the Choudwar jail to a jail in Baripada earlier.

Though he was rushed to a hospital in Balasore for treatment, he succumbed to the critical injuries while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh informed that Hyder sustained injury from a solitary bullet fired at him by an escort staff in self-defence after the gangster tried to snatch away firearm from one of the staff in a bid to flee.

Meanwhile, the wife of the slain gangster has accused the police of staging her husband’s killing. “Police took my husband out of the jail and killed him mid-way claiming that he made escape attempts. The jailer and others were involved in the killing,” she alleged.

She further said while justifying her claims that the police usually target the legs when an accused attempts to flee from their custody. “Heart and head has never been the target during police encounters,” she said.
