In a major crackdown, a duplicate spice processing unit was busted by police in Cuttack on Saturday.

A huge cache of sub-standard raw materials, counterfeit labels of noted spice brands and processing machinery were seized during the raid.

The spice manufacturing unit is located in Bayalis Mouza area of the Silver City. Poor quality turmeric and chilli powder were reportedly being manufactured at the unit. 

The police have seized a large stock of raw materials and harmful chemicals during the raid at the processing unit. 

Sources said, the manufacturer used to employ wasted rice grains, flavours and chemical colours for preparing turmeric and chilli powder.

The duplicate products were packed and supplied in the locality in the name of some well known spice brands.

The factory owner is said to have admitted before the police that he was illegally operating the manufacturing unit to produce duplicate products. 

The owner of the spice producing plant has been detained by the police for further inquiry.
