A businessman’s driver was arrested for allegedly cooking up a fake robbery story to steal his employer’s money in Choudwar area of Cuttack district, on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Krushnachandra Behera who was employed as a driver by Bibhuti Bhushan Sahu, a resident of CDA locality in Cuttack, who owns a petrol pump near Nuapatna (Choudwar). The police recovered Rs 1,34,000 cash from a bush where Behera had hidden the money.

As per the complaint, on January 5 night Sahu urgently needed some cash. Relying on Behere, Sahu sent the former to the petrol pump to fetch the money.

When Behera didn’t return even after the usual time required for both ways journey, Sahu grew suspicious. To find out what had happened to Behera, he contacted the manager at the petrol pump who told him that Behera had left the pump two hours back with the money.

Sahu then went out in search of his driver only to find him on Nuapatna bridge with the vehicle. Seeing Sahu, Behera started crying and told the former that four miscreants took away the cash from him.
Following this, Sahu lodged a complaint with the police which lodged an offence and started an investigation. The police grew suspicious about Behera’s claims and subjected him to questioning.

Behera, police said, broke down during intensive questioning and confessed to have faked the robbery. He then took the police to a bush from where the police recovered Rs1,34,000. Subsequently, Behera was put under arrest.
