A dreaded criminal, involved in a number of bombing and attempt to murder cases, was nabbed following a police encounter in Bhubaneswar in the wee hours of Sunday. The criminal identified as Jitendra Palei, was arrested after a high-drama chase by the Commissionerate Police near the Bankual Kuakhai river embankment.

Senior police officials said that Palei was wanted in a bombing and attempt to murder case registered in Kharvelanagar. On getting information regarding the movement of the criminal towards Bhubaneswar, a police team led by the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Kharvelanagar police station and other officers intercepted Palei near Tankapani road. However, the criminal managed to escape via an earthen road.

Later, the police team chased Palei and intercepted him near Bankual Kuakhai river embankment. As the criminal started firing at the police team, the senior officers also retaliated. In the process, the criminal sustained a bullet injury on his leg and has been admitted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

"The criminal was involved in the bombing of a jewellery shop owner recently. Our team had identified him and later tracked him down. During the chase, the criminal sustained a bullet injury in controlled firing by police which was done in self-defence," said Bhubaneswar DCP, Prateek Singh.
