A woman, owner of a road side eatery (Dhaba) was allegedly shot dead by two miscreants at Duajhara under Khariar block in Nuapada district late on Saturday night.

The deceased identified as Basanti Meher reportedly had an argument with the miscreants who were in an inebriated condition. The brawl ensued between them over serving of food.

According to reports, the miscreants asked her to serve food and she refused due to unavailability of any such items in the later part of the night. One of the miscreants lost his cool and opened fire at her from a country pistol, husband of the deceased said.

Meher sustained critical bullet injuries following which she was immediately rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead during treatment.

“They (miscreants) were seating inside the eatery and were heavily drunk. They argued with my wife asking for food. We expressed our inability to serve food as no items were available at that hour of the night. He suddenly opened fire at my wife,” said husband of the deceased.

On the other hand, the assailants fled the spot soon after committing the crime.

On receiving a complaint, police launched an investigation after visiting the spot.

Police are investigating into the circumstances that led to the shootout even as the exact reason behind the murder has not yet been established.

Speaking on the incident, police said that the investigation is underway. The miscreants will be nabbed soon. All angles in the case are being probed.
