In a major development in the mysterious death of Chittaranjan Palai, the post-mortem report confirmed that cause of death is drowning.

Palai was a key aide of BJD leader and deputy chairman of State Planning Board, Sanjay Das Burma.

Additional district medical officer (ADMO) Pranab Shankar Das on Monday said the post-mortem report of Chittaranjan Palai has arrived and the finding of the report revealed that he died of drowning. 

Das said the post-mortem report has been sent to state forensic lab and police. 

Chittaranjan, a native of Sanabandhakera village in Brahmagiri tehsil of Puri district, was found dead under mysterious circumstances near Nuanai in Puri district on December 13. 

On the basis of the complaint of the family members of the deceased, Sadar police had registered a murder case.  On December 15, the Director General of Police (DGP) handed over the investigation to the State Crime Branch.

A four-member Crime Branch team led by DSP Sisir Kumar Mishra is currently investigating the case. Sanjeeb Panda, Crime Branch ADG had recently visited the accident spot of Jagannath Sarangi (Jaga), another associate of Burma and the spot where body of Chittaranjan was found.

The Crime Branch (CB) team has also questioned Das Burma’s PSO, Sarbeswar Jena and the deceased’s nephew Dillip who were part of a feast hosted by Jagannath Sarangi on that fateful night. Three others; Umakanta Paikray, Suryaprasad Mishra and Jagannath Sarangi were also grilled by the sleuths.
