Daylight firing on National Highway in Odisha’s Baripada leaves one injured; loot bid suspected

According to initial reports, five to six armed assailants arrived on a motorcycle and ambushed the youth, identified as Sibananda Barik, who works as a sales manager at a foreign liquor shop.

In a shocking incident that has triggered panic among locals, a young man was shot multiple times on the roadside near Asanjoada along National Highway-18 in Baripada on Monday. The daring attack, carried out in broad daylight, has raised serious concerns over the law and order in the area.

According to initial reports, five to six armed assailants arrived on a motorcycle and ambushed the youth, identified as Sibananda Barik, who works as a sales manager at a foreign liquor shop.

The attackers allegedly fired four to five rounds, and two bullets hit the victim, including one on his leg.

As per initial reports, he was on his way to deposit cash in the bank on a motorcycle when five to six miscreants followed and intercepted him. While trying to snatch the bag containing the cash, Barik tried to flee the spot. However, the miscreants followed and fired two rounds at Barik, leaving him critically injured.

Sources said that the miscreants were communicating in Bengali and were unable to decamp with the cash; and, they fled the spot after seeing a group of locals arriving at the spot.

The injured youth was immediately rescued and rushed to PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada, where his condition is said to be critical but stable. Medical staff confirmed he sustained gunshot wounds to his lower limbs, and emergency treatment was initiated.

While the identity of the attackers remains unknown, preliminary investigation suggests that the motive could be linked to a robbery attempt, as the assailants did not appear to have any personal dispute with the victim. 

Police have not ruled out other possibilities and are currently scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace the movement of the suspects.

A team from Baripada Town Police has launched an investigation and forensic experts have visited the crime scene to collect evidence, including bullet shells and possible fingerprints. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to nab the culprits.
