Odisha witnessed an unprecedented surge in cyber crime activities in the past one month with unsuspecting citizens losing over Rs 1.53 crore  to cyber frauds.

From the State Capital city of Bhubaneswar alone, the fraudsters managed to swindle more than Rs 83 lakh in June.

While the cyber cells received 463 calls related to such frauds, a total of 14 cases have been registered and 67 mobile numbers were blocked, informed the police.

As per the monthly summary compiled by the cyber help desk, Bhubaneswar UPD for the month of June:

Total call received in the month- 463

Calls received from Bhubaneswar only- 229

Types of fraud:

UPI fraud from Bhubaneswar- 93

Credit/Debit card fraud- 77

Other calls received- 59

Total fraud amount details- Rs 1,53,29,780

Fraud amount from Bhubaneswar- Rs 83,08,662

Refund/blocked amount- Rs 16,05,800

Cases registered in the month of June- 14

Number of cybersafe tickets generated- 67 (numbers blocked)

It is pertinent to mention here that the Commissionerate Police on Tuesday busted a racket involved in selling pre-activated SIM cards. Such cards are mostly used by criminals to perpetrate cyber crimes, police had stated.

Seven persons including some staff of various mobile phone service providers, distributors and retailers were arrested and over 16,000 pre-activated SIM cards and 150 mobile phones had been seized from their possession.
