With the brutal murder of five members of a family sending shock waves among residents of Cuttack, the police have launched a thorough probe to find out the circumstances leading to the crime.

While the prima facie investigation indicates that accused Shiva Sahu has wiped out his brother's entire family, Inspector General (IG) of Police, Central Range, Narasingha Bhola on Tuesday said that the probability of involvement of other people in the case cannot be ruled out.

Speaking to reporters, Bhola said, “From the neighbour’s account, who denied of hearing any commotion before the murder, it is possible that the accused has drugged the victims before killing them.”

"While it is too early to say anything about the murder, we cannot rule out the possibility of others in the case,” Bhola added.

In the horrific incident, Shiva Sahu had allegedly killed five members of his elder brother’s family following a feud at Kusupur village under Mahanga police station in Cuttack district on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Alekh Sahu, his wife, their two sons and a daughter.

Alekh’s younger brother Shiva locked the room following the gruesome incident and later surrendered at Balichandrapur police station in Jajpur district after recording a confession video which he sent to a couple of people in the village.

“My elder brother and his family members had been torturing me for a long time. All of them thrashed me together last night following an argument over a patch of land. I lost my cool and killed all of them. I will accept any punishment ordered by the court as per the provision of law,” said Shiva in the video confession.

Cuttack Rural SP, P Jugal Kishore told reporters, “Initial investigations have confirmed that Shiva is the culprit and he was the one who murdered all five in cold blood. He is currently in police custody. We will be able to know more after questioning him.”
