Ghatagaon police on Sunday arrested a man on charges of impersonating the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and duping jobseekers on the pretext of providing them with employment in the Police department.

The arrested youth has been identified as Sujit Padhiari, a resident of Sujanpur in Jajpur district.

According to sources, Padhiari allegedly duped some job aspirants from Jajpur, Keonjhar and Bhubaneswar promising them employment.

Based on the complaint lodged by the victims, the Ghatagaon police launched a probe into the case and managed to arrest Padhiari from a lodge in the locality.

The police have also seized police uniform, mobile phone, duplicate gold chain, rings and Rs 12,000 cash from his possession, sources informed.

“He (Padhiari) told me that he holds top position in Police department and can provide me a job if I pay him Rs 35,000. After I paid him, he started ignoring my calls. Finding no other option, I lodged a complaint in this regard with the local police,” said Paresh Kumar, a victim.

“A youth came and lodged a complaint that a man impersonating DIG duped him to the tune of Rs 25,000 promising a job. Acting on his complaint, a raid was conducted and the accused was apprehended from a lodge in Ghatagaon area,” Ghatagaon Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sushil Kumar Mishra said.
