Commissionerate Police on Friday busted a criminal gang involved in snatching and loot of cash and other valuables by attacking victims with sharp weapons.

Bhubaneswar DCP, Umashankar Das said five persons, including a juvenile, have been arrested in this connection. All the criminals were part of the criminal gang which mostly targeted people during early morning hours in different parts of the capital city.

Between March 2 and April 14, the gang had committed 17 cases of snatching and loot.

“Our special teams were alert and on the lookout for the criminals. On April 14, our night patrolling team intercepted the gang members, but they gave a slip. However, Khandagiri police managed to nab five members of the group,” said Dash.

The criminal gang used to snatch mobile phones, cash and other valuables by attacking people with sharp weapons. The gang was actively involved in crimes in Bharatpur, Khandagiri, Nayapalli and other parts of the city.

Police have recovered four motorcycles, Rs 36,000 cash, 22 mobile phones and several watches from the criminal gang.

“I was travelling to Bharatpur area from Bermunda when the criminals attacked me at around 4:30 am. They took away my laptop bag, wallet and other valuables,” said Arun Sahu, a victim.
