A businessman was hacked to death by some unidentified miscreants at Satyangar near Achyutpur village under Industrial Area Police Station in Balasore on Saturday.

Though the exact reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, family member of the deceased suspect the crime could be the fallout of a land dispute or past enmity.

The victim has been identified as Ramesh Behera alias Nunu of nearby Ganeswarpur village in the district. Ramesh was engaged in some buying and selling of lands.

On Saturday evening, Ramesh went to see one of his lands at Satyangar when he was reportedly attacked by some miscreants with sharp weapon leading to his death on the spot.

Upon getting information at around 8.30 PM (yesterday), Industrial Area Police rushed to the spot and began investigation.

Umesh Chandra Behera, elder brother of the deceased said, “Land dispute might be the reason behind the murder. He might have been called to the spot by some known people as he was hardly going out of house in the night. He might have been hacked with sharp weapons.”

“There are multiple deep cuts on his body and we suspect, he was attacked with sharp weapons. However, the exact cause of the death will be known after post-mortem,” informed IIC of Industrial Area Police Station, Minati Bishwal.

Meanwhile, police have seized Ramesh’s scooty and weapons used in the crime from the spot. Police have also called upon a scientific team for detailed examination and questioning of locals residing near the crime scene.
