In a major crackdown on drugs smuggling, Khordha Town Police on Wednesday seized 560 gram brown sugar worth Rs 56 lakh and arrested four persons including a woman in connection with the case.

According to sources, three persons of a family from Ramachandi village and one from Ranapur area in Nayagarh district have been arrested for smuggling the brown sugar.

The accused have been identified as- one Siba Mallick, his wife Sushama Mallick, son Jaya Prakash Mallick and Pratap Kumar Mohapatra.

Acting on a tip off, the police apprehended an auto rickshaw near Totapada Chhak and seized brown sugar from the possession of the accused, sources said.

The four accused were smuggling brown sugar from Nayagarh to Khordha.

“We have seized 560 gram brown sugar and arrested four persons in connection with the case. Earlier, we had seized contrabands worth Rs 22 lakh. Our efforts are on to make Khordha brown sugar-free,” said Siddharth Kataria, Khordha SP.
