Despite regular crackdowns by the police and Excise department officials, Illegal narcotic drugs trade continues to thrive in Balasore district which is fast turning into a hub for the trade of the contrabands.

In yet another major crackdown, Cuttack Excise Department and Balasore police conducted a joint raid at Bidyadharpur village under Basta block in the district on Thursday and seized two kg of brown sugar worth around Rs 2 crore.

As many as three persons have been arrested for peddling the contraband. Other incriminating materials were also recovered from their possession, police said.

Acting on an intelligence input, the joint team conducted a raid and nabbed the peddlers apart from seizing the narcotic substance from their possession.

As per police sources, the drug peddlers attacked the team and damaged their vehicles during the raid. However, the team somehow managed to nab the peddlers.

A case has been registered against the trio under sections 21 (C) and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985.

"Further investigation into the incident is underway. The accused will be forwarded to court soon," said a police official.

It is worth mentioning that over 10 kilogram of the narcotic substance has been seized from the district and as many as 72 persons have been arrested in this connection in the last three months.
