With no formal training in martial arts, a girl student from the Steel City of Rourkela in Odisha showed exemplary courage when she fought valiantly with a miscreant who attacked her with a knife while trying to rob her laptop bag and mobile phone, on Saturday.

Seeing her ferocity and unrelenting fighting spirit, the miscreant finally gave up and ran away with whatever he could lay his hands on. Nevertheless, the heroic stance of the girl has since become a talk of the town.

The incident occurred when the girl, a first year BCA student, was returning to her home in the Steel City from Bhubaneswar. After getting down from the bus, she was walking towards her home near Ring Road when the miscreant, holding a knife, appeared from nowhere.

She said at that point of time, she was talking to her mother over phone. Before she could make out anything, the miscreant pounced on her and attacked her with the knife.

“After I got down from the bus and walking towards my house, a miscreant came from behind and tried to snatch my laptop and mobile phone after injuring her with the knife,” the girl, who wished not to be named, said.

She said she decided to fight back despite suffering deep wounds in the knife attack. “I sustained injuries on my hands. However, I managed to grab the knife and hit the miscreant,” said the victim.

She said although the attack took place in full public view as many people were out jogging in the morning, no one came to her rescue.

“I don’t know any martial arts. I was talking with my mother over phone when the attack happened. But I just mustered courage and fought back with the attacker. I urge girls to learn martial arts so that they can defend themselves in such emergency situation,” the victim added.

Father of the girl said, “As a father I became worried when I heard about the incident. However, I am proud that my little girl did not give up and fought back.”

Meanwhile, an FIR in connection with the incident has been registered with Sector-3 police station and a hunt is on to track down the attacker.
