Three youths riding a bike were injured while trying to evade a Police checking on Goshani Nuagaon overbridge on Sunday night.

As per reports, the Police tried to stop a motorcycle carrying the three youths for over speeding on the flyover. However, the rider lost control and swerved off the road when a policeman asked him to stop by showing a stick.

The trio, which fell of the bike, had received injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

While the Berhampur Police have been hailed for barricading roads and punishing traffic offenders in the city, this particular action by a policeman come under criticism.

Some intellectuals are of the opinion that the Police should not have used sticks to stop a traffic offender. Instead, if they evaded the check post, the Police should have sent summons to the bike owner after obtaining information from the registration number. It might have served the purpose without causing harm to anybody.

Berhampur SP, Pinak Mishra told reporters, “After watching the video grab, I asked the concerned IIC to ascertain the circumstances leading to the mishap.”

“We have been sensitising police personnel to be alert while conducting traffic checks. I can share more details only after verifying all the facts. If the police personnel are found guilty, disciplinary proceedings against them can’t be ruled out,” said Mishra.

It is worthwhile to mention here that the State Transport department has tightened the noose around the traffic offenders since January 1, 2021. A two-wheeler rider would invite suspension of his Driving Licence (DL) for a period of three months if found riding the vehicle without wearing a helmet. The government had also earlier made helmet mandatory for the pillion rider.
