The Tamando Police under the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD) arrested a divyang man on charges of duping unsuspecting victims of their hard earned money by posing as a CBI officer, on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as Nikhil Swain and the particulars of his physical disabilities are yet to be made public by the Police.

As per reports, Swain duped a girl of Rs 30,000 by assuring her of providing better treatment to her ailing father who is suffering from cancer. He identified himself as a officer with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to win confidence of the unsuspecting victim, police said.

Similarly, Swain took a vehicle from its owner for use. After some days, the finance company seized the vehicle for non-payment of EMIs. He then allegedly took Rs 40,000 from the owner with an assurance to settle the outstanding EMIs by claiming himself to be a CBI officer. However, he vanished after coughing up the money without making any payment to the finance company, police said.

The Tamando Police had spread a dragnet for Swain for quite some time after multiple complaints were lodged against him by people who had been duped by him.

The police have also obtained a recorded conversation (phone call) in which Swain could be heard promising a man with a license for an old age home against payment of a large amount. However, the man suspected something amiss and informed the police. Here too, Swain had posed as a CBI official.

Meanwhile, the State police has stepped up surveillance for miscreants following occurrence of a large number of fraud cases in recent times.
