The Commissionerate Police arrested two persons on Saturday for attacking a woman and her father-in-law at Padmakesharipur village on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

The arrested persons have been identified as Babula Das and his associate Tapas Das. They allegedly assaulted the victim woman and her father-in-law when they expressed their inability to repay the demanded amount, which is many times more than the actual principal.

The duo was produced in a court today.

“Since disturbances were reported from Padmakesharipur village in the past, we are taking the present case seriously.  The two persons involved in assaulting the victims have been arrested. They have been forwarded to court,” said Bhubaneswar DCP, Prateek Singh.

As per reports, a resident of Padmakesharipur had taken a loan of Rs 10,000 from a private money lender about 15 years ago. The family living in a hut with a tarpaulin sheet-roof is still repaying the loan. The money lender is presently asking the impoverished family to pay Rs 15 lakh more.

“They are demanding Rs 15 lakh more from us. As we have expressed our inability to pay them such a huge amount, they are asking us to vacate the patch of land we are staying on,” said Pradeep, son of the borrower.
