In a fresh twist to the firing incident at CRP Square in Bhubaneswar last night, the police on Wednesday said the blank firing was triggered from a licensed gun.

Binay Acharya had resorted to the blank firing using the licensed gun of his wife who is a shooting player. The police have seized the gun.

Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Prateek Singh said the license of the gun will be cancelled.

Notably, Chhatra Congress leader Bibhu Prasad Jena had a narrow escape in the firing last night.

As per the complaint, Jena and his friend were standing near a shop at CRP square when two persons accosted them. The pair abused him and later pointed gun at his chest.

Jena said when he tried to flee, two rounds of bullet were fired. He claimed that the incident was due to political vindictiveness.

"Nayapalli police has apprehended Binayak Acharya immediately after the incident. He confessed that there was an altercation and he fired two rounds from a .22 caliber firearm of his wife before fleeing the spot. Apart from the .22 caliber firearm, we have seized five rounds of live ammunition from his possession. We have arrested him under relevant sections of IPC and forwarded him to court today," the DCP said.
