The Commissionerate Police has busted a thief gang from Tamil Nadu involved in a series of stealing incidents in Bhubaneswar and arrested two members.

The gang members used to pretend as deaf and dumb and steal valuables from mess and working women’s hostels in the city.

The police identified both the accused as Krishna. As many as 22 cellphones, two laptops, cameras and other stolen items were seized from their possession.

Speaking about the modus operandi of the gang, the police said the gang members, both males and females, roam near traffic signals, markets and residential areas sometimes on the pretext of selling some items and looking for targets. They carry fake disability certificates with the stamp of Tamil Nadu government in order to shield themselves from arrest.

“The gang members used to target mess and working women’s hostels. They carry deaf and dump certificate which turned out to be fake during verification,” PC Pal, additional ACP, Bhubaneswar said.

Earlier, the gang was busted in Sahid Nagar area of the city and more than 35 mobile phones were seized.

“My seven cellphones, one laptop, a bag containing camera and other equipment were stolen. The police investigated the case and found the CCTV footage which showed that one person had stolen all the items,” said a complainant.

Pal, additional ACP, Bhubaneswar said, “After stealing, the gang member immediately hand over items to other gang member making it difficult for us to recover the items. We learnt that they were staying in a rented accommodation in Jatani and Bhubaneswar. We are verifying them.”
