The officials of the Vigilance Directorate on Saturday arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Odisha Police while taking a bribe from a complainant to help him in a case in Cuttack. The accused ASI, Alok Sarangi, was posted at Bhadreswar Police Station in Cuttack district.

As per initial reports, Sarangi had allegedly demanded money from the complainant to relax Sections in the case registered against him. The complainant had subsequently sought help from the Vigilance and a trap was laid.

As per the plan, Sarangi was apprehended while taking a bribe of Rs 8000 from the complainant on the Police Station premises. Following the development, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to the ASI from a disproportionate assets (DA) case angle.

The Cuttack Vigilance has registered a case under Section 7 of the PC Amendment Act, 2018 and further investigation is underway in this connection.
