A special POCSO court in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday awarded a 62-year-old man to 10 years rigourous imprisonment after convicting him of sexually assaulting a two-and-a-half year old girl in 2014. 

As per sources, a villager of Jamada area in Mayurbhanj district had taken his daughter to a marriage function in March, 2014 where the accused, one Daragha Barada, took the girl on the pretext of fondling her and she went missing thereafter. 

Next morning, the villagers spotted her in a critical condition lying by the side of the village road. The villagers detained Daragha and later handed him over to the police. 

The court sentenced him to undergo 10 years of rigours imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. 

In a similar development, Additional District and Session Judge, Dharmagada awarded 20 years rigours imprisonment and Rs 50,000 fine to one Bhagabatia Bhoi for sexually abusing a 75-year-old resident of Dharmagada area. The heinous crime took place under Golamunda police limits in 2019.

“The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Dharmagada awarded 20 years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 to the accused. The judge directed the fine amount be given to the victim. In default, the accused will undergo another jail term of one year,” informed additional public prosecutor Purnachandra Nag.
