The Rayagada police have nabbed six persons impersonating themselves as Maoists on charges of extortion and other criminal activities in the region.

According to sources, of the six accused, three belong to Rayagada while others are from the Kalahandi district.

Recently, these fraudsters had demanded money from one Tutu Gopal of Sunger village under Kashipur police limits in the district and threatened to kill him if he fails to do so.

The miscreants also planted a time bomb in the toilet of Tutu’s house to kill him.

Vivekanand Sharma, SP Rayagada said; “The event took place on December 7, when the miscreants planted a time bomb in the toilet of Tutu Gopal. They demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh and threatened to eliminate him if he fails to pay the money."

"On being informed about the incident, the police along with the scientific team, CRPF officials and the bomb diffusal squad arrived at the spot and neutralise the bomb," Sharma added.

The police officials have also seized a detonator, electric wires, four mobile phones and a cylinder from the miscreants.

Further investigation on this matter is on.
