Two hardcore criminals were nabbed following an encounter with police near Barapada in Bhadrak district on Wednesday morning.

The duo identified as Prahalad Das of Soro and Sushant Mallick of Nilagiri in Balasore district is accused of the robbery of Rs 29 lakh from an ATM near Lakshinarayan Temple in Charampa area of Bhadrak district on November 26.

Das and Mallick, who have received bullet injuries in their legs, were initially admitted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Bhadrak and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack after their health condition worsened.

Acting on a tipoff about the movement of some wanted criminals, a team from Bhadrak Rural Police Station raided a few locations in the Barapada area before encountering the anti-socials. 

The confrontation saw the two criminals open fire at the cops in a bid to escape arrest, however, the Police fired back in retaliation and nabbed the two criminals. Police have recovered four magazines, three mousers and sharp weapons from their possession. 

Three police officials, including Bhadrak Rural Police Station Inspector-in-Charge (IIC), Alok Jena and Constable Srikant Jena have also received minor injuries in the gunfight. 

Four other people detained in connection with the case are being quizzed by the police. All of them are reported to be involved in multiple cases of crimes. 

Earlier on November 26, six miscreants on two motorcycles came to the ATM near the Laxmi Narayan temple in Charampa area and threatened the employees of a cash agency while they were busy in loading cash in the kiosk. They later filled a bag with the notes and fled the spot with around Rs 29 lakh on their motorbikes.
