Unidentified miscreants snatched and fled with cash over Rs 17 lakh from a trader, who was on his way to deposit the amount in bank, in Phulbani area of Kandhamal district on Monday.

The trader identified as Ajay Patra, who runs a grocery store, was on his way to Axis Bank along with one of his staff when the robbers intercepted them in a Pulsar motorcycle. In a flash, the miscreants snatched the bag from the staff of Patra who was riding pillion.

Patra reportedly sustained injuries after falling down from the motorcycle. “My brother and his staff were travelling on a motorcycle when the miscreants looted the money. My brother sustained injuries as the miscreants pushed his bike after snatching the bag containing the cash,” said Bhaskar Patra, brother of the trader.

According to Bhaskar, as the banks were closed for the past three days, they had a lot of pending cash to deposit today.

“We were coming to deposit the cash when the miscreants came from behind and dragged the bag. In the meantime, we also fell down from the bike. Police have started examination on the basis of CCTV footage,” said Ramesh, staff of the injured trader.
