The investigating officer (IO) attached with Badagada police station in Bhubaneswar and in charge of the alleged custodial death case of a person reportedly detained on a cycle theft case recently has been transferred.

According to reports, the investigating officer, S K Behera, has been replaced by an inspector-ranked officer attached with the district Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) who will now probe the case.

While the investigation into the case will be done on the basis of post-mortem report, sources said various other aspects like circumstantial evidence, statements, the family members’ allegation of custodial death will also be included under the purview of the investigation.

The investigation will proceed in accordance with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines.

As a DCP rank officer will supervise the investigation, it has been directed that the probe report should be submitted to the DCP, Bhubaneswar within 48 hours. In turn, the DCP will submit the report to the NHRC.

Notably, the Badagada police had picked one named Pradeep Sahu, a resident of Kapilaprasad in the city, in connection with a cycle theft case.

While his family members claim that he reportedly fell sick under the custody due to police torture and died at Capital Hospital, revelation of another woman who claimed her to be the deceased man's wife has left the police in splits.
