Rajendra Prasad Mohapatra

Despite undergoing advanced Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) treatment in Kolkata for around three months, critical Covid-19 patient Abhishek Mohapatra from Bhadrak passed away on Friday night.

Barely a week after his marriage, Abhiskek from Basudevpur area had contracted the virus. He was immediately admitted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment. Later, he was shifted to ICU and was on 100 percent Oxygen support. However, his condition deteriorated and doctors suggested ECMO support as the only course of treatment left to save his life.

Due to severe financial constraint, it was decided earlier that the 28-year-old critical patient will be shifted to Kolkata through a special ambulance with ECMO support. But the doctors cautioned against it and he was finally airlifted to Kolkata on June 7 after the family collected the required amount of money through a fund raising campaign.

It is worth mentioning that Abhishek was among the first few patients in the State to have been airlifted outside the State for ECMO treatment. However, later, Odisha government pressed into action and the advanced treatment is now available at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and AIIMS in Bhubaneswar.
