Bhubaneswar: Covid-19 positive cases and number of fatalities graphs are on the rise in Odisha. However, a top health expert in the State said that the present trend will take a nosedive from the first week of next month.

“Now the situation in the State is not much serious and it will continue till the end of May. The daily infections may witness a downward trend from June first week onwards,” said Director of Capital Hospital, Dr Laxmidhar Sahoo.

Sahoo further predicted that the single day cases will further dip from June first week as people are adhering to the lockdown guidelines enforced by the State government.

“People will not roam outside because of the forthcoming cyclone and rain as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). They will be forced to remain at their homes in the coming week. It will definitely help keep the rate of infection in check,” said Sahoo.

“I urge people to obey the Covid-19 guidelines strictly by wearing masks, maintaining social distancing and remaining at their homes as far as possible. Next five to seven days are very much crucial to keep the pandemic in check,” he said.

Sahoo also urged people not to expose themselves to rain. “In case they get cold, it will affect their immunity and make them vulnerable to infection,” said Sahoo.

The health expert also advised people not to get panic for the third surge of Covid-19 from now.

“Nothing could be predicted about the third surge. We should keep our focus on how to beat the ongoing second surge of the pandemic. If we are careful enough and obey all the Covid-19 guidelines seriously, the third surge may not come at all,” said Sahoo.

He also discarded the theory that children will be more vulnerable in the third surge of the pandemic.

“All these things are theories and assumptions. Covid-19 has no standard protocol. We should avoid crowd as much as possible and obey the pandemic norms imposed by the government seriously to keep ourselves and others safe from Covid-19,” he said.
