With Odisha having shifted its focus on the probable third wave from now, and when experts are echoing the view that children could be the next target of Coronavirus, the data from the second wave reveals that infection of children has grown this time, but not of an eye-popping growth.
As per the data with the State Health Department, when in the first wave the number of children infected by the novel coronavirus stood below 4 per cent, the proportion in the second wave has grown to a little over 5 per cent.
The data further shows that hospital admission of children during the second wave in the State is only a bit higher than the first wave. The only change witnessed in the second wave is, State saw few casualties. Even a four-month-old child has fallen to Covid-19 and the child had no other morbidities.
Meanwhile, AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria has recently said that data from the country and world has no such evidence to show that the children have been hospitalised more in the second wave or they may have to bear the brunt in the third wave.
"The hospitalizations and few fatalities among children in the age-group of below 14-years in the country have been the consequence of lower immunity and some co-morbidities," he claimed.
The rising concern has been basically due to the unavailability of vaccines for children as of now, unlike the adults.

As per the data, the State saw infections of nearly 25000 children during the period of mid-April to June 8. The positive cases detected among children below 14 years have been estimated at around 42,918, which is over 5 per cent of the total Covid-19 positives in Odisha.
A comparative analysis puts the infection in children this time higher than the first wave. The causalities are also marginally higher, it reveals.
