Even as the daily count of Covid-19 cases continued downward trend in Odisha, the fatalities due to the viral disease continue to soar in the past one week in the State.

The State on Tuesday reported 17 fatalities due to SARS-CoV-2 infection which pushed the total death toll to 8,629, informed the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department.

While four deaths were reported from Cuttack, two fatalities each were from Khordha and Puri districts. Besides, one death each was reported from Angul, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Malkangiri and Rayagada.

The State had reported 18 deaths on January 31, 19 on January 30 and 15 on January 29, respectively.

Meanwhile, the single-day spike of Covid-19 cases in the State continued to remain below 4,000 for the second consecutive day.

On Tuesday, as many as 3,086 cases, including 454 from 0 to 18 years age group, were detected pushing the positive tally to 12,52,326, said a count released by the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department.

Of the total new cases, 1,797 were detected from quarantine while 1,289 were local transmission cases.

Khordha district, including the Capital region Bhubaneswar, registered 652 new infections, followed by 325 in Cuttack and 216 in Sundargarh, said the I&PR Department. The daily test positivity rate remained at around 5.2 per cent against 5.87 per cent on Monday

The active cases in the State stand at 42,098 while recoveries are at 12,01,546. As many as 2,76,27,196 samples, including 59,286 in the last 24 hours, have been tested for Covid-19 so far.
