Drunk driver crashes car into road divider in Bhubaneswar, 2 injured

In a grim reminder of hit-and-run cases involving drunken driving, a tipsy man speeding in a Nissan Terrano crashed into a road divider after hitting a traffic post, leaving a couple critically injured at Damana Square, Bhubaneswar late Saturday night.

Other motorists and pedestrians on the road narrowly escaped death by a whisker. Police said the man was fully drunk while driving his vehicle. The impact of the collision was so severe that the car skidded after hitting the traffic post and subsequently crashed into the divider. The vehicle has been completely damaged in the mishap while the accident spot also requires repair.

A couple on a scooty was hit by the car and sustained critical injuries. Passers-by came to their rescue and immediately called an ambulance to take them to Capital Hospital.

It was not immediately known where the drunk driver was returning from. According to reports, he was driving recklessly and tried to speed away at the Damana traffic post by jumping the traffic lights. However, he lost control and hit the traffic police post, later crashing into the divider between the roads.

The identity of the accused driver was not immediately known. The rising cases of drunk driving in the capital city of Bhubaneswar have become a matter of serious concern.
