In a tragic incident, a couple was killed while three others sustained critical injuries after the car they were travelling in collided with a roadside tree at Chari Chhak under Purunacuttack police limits in Boudh district in the early hours of Wednesday.

One among the deceased has been identified as Surendra Nayak. They were the residents Belaguntha area in Ganjam district.

The injured trio was initially rushed to the Purunacuttack hospital and later shifted to Boudh District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after their health condition deteriorated.

At around 3 to 4 am today, Surendra along with his wife and three relatives was on his way from Berhampur in Ganjam district to Rourkela in Sundargarh district when the driver lost control over the vehicle which rammed into a roadside tree. The couple died on the spot.

A team of Harbhanga fire tenders rushed the spot after receiving the information and rescued the three injured from inside the vehicle. They were later sent to the nearby hospital for treatment, said reports.

On the other hand, Purunacuttack Police also reached the spot and sent the dead bodies for post-mortem. Police have also started an investigation to ascertain the exact reason behind the mishap.

Police officials are suspecting that the driver of the car might have dozed off which led to the fatal accident, said sources.
