After the death of a student, who was injured in a road mishap in Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar on Friday, hundreds of local residents on Saturday staged a roadblock at Panda Park square, demanding construction of speed breakers. 

The 12-year-old student was injured critically in the road mishap on Friday. He was immediately rushed to a hospital. While undergoing treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. 

As the news of his death spread, hundreds of people including women came out and staged a roadblock. Alleging accidents are frequent on the road, they demanded speed breakers.

The agitation affected vehicular movement on the stretch. On being informed, police reached the spot and managed to persuade the irate people. The villagers withdrew the roadblock only after they were promised of construction of speed breakers. 

“Yesterday a minor from our locality was killed in a road mishap. We demand construction of speed breakers on the road,” said a woman protestor. 

“There are seven slums here and around 2000 families are residing there. The nearby road has turned into a death trap, claiming 15 lives and equal numbers of youths are undergoing treatment in hospitals. I have written letters to the Commissioner of Police and the IIC of Chandrasekharpur Police Station, requesting them to find a permanent solution. As nothing is being done in this regard, we staged a roadblock today,” said a local resident.
