At least three staff of Tata Power were killed while two others sustained grievous injuries after their vehicle collided head-on with a speeding truck at Thakurpada near Matupali on the Subarnapur-Sambalpur road.
Sources said the tragic mishap occurred while an SUV was ferrying the discom workers. Their SUV collided head-on with a truck on the Subarnapur-Sambalpur road, killing three of the employees. The deceased have been identified as Sushila Naik, Tapan Patra, and Artatrana Purohit. On being informed, police rushed to the spot and seized the vehicles.
Those who were in the truck were also injured. They were admitted to Sonepur district headquarters hospital (DHH), reports said. Tata Power is yet to release an official statement over the incident.
Recently, Tata Power faced backlash from farmers and residents across Odisha over their alleged unethical practices of collecting fines and penalizing people with faculty electricity meters.
Consumers accused the power company of wrong and inflated billing. They also accused the discom of using coercive measures for peoples’ inability to pay.
On the other hand, frequent power outages amidst the rising heat, especially in rural areas, have spread outrage among consumers across Odisha. Many political parties have earlier called upon people not to pay pending electricity bills until they are given an uninterrupted power supply.
