IMD issues heavy rain alert for parts of Tamil Nadu due to deep depression

The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu till January 11. According to weather reports, a deep depression is expected to cross Sri Lanka by January 10 afternoon.

In view of the weather conditions, yellow and orange alerts has been issued in several regions of the state. Thiruvarur, Karaikal, and Nagapattinum are under orange alert, while Chennai, Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Madurai and Thiruchirapalli are under yellow alert.

"The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwestwards with a speed of 8 kmph during the past 6 hours, and lay centred at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 9th January, 2026, over the same region," IMD posted on X.

It is likely to move northwestwards and weaken into a depression during the next six hours, the post further read.

According to the Regional Meteorological Department’s long-range forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore on Saturday. The department has also predicted a generally cloudy sky, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

In view of the adverse conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till January 10.
