The capital recorded one of the worst air quality levels this season on December 15, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 498 in the “severe plus” category. The spike followed a similar rise on the preceding day, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) IV—the strictest anti-pollution measures—to curb the crisis.

Under the new measures, construction activities remain banned, and the government announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 for registered construction workers unable to work.

The severe smog between Saturday and Monday caused reduced visibility, leading to multiple road accidents, vehicle pile-ups, and flight cancellations and delays. Delhi Airport and airlines issued advisories to passengers during this period.

On Tuesday, the city saw slight relief as stronger winds and thinning fog brought AQI levels down to the “very poor” category. However, authorities continue to urge residents to limit outdoor activities and comply with safety measures as pollution levels remain hazardous.
