Chennai/Puducherry: The very severe cyclonic storm Nivar which made landfall in the early hours of Thursday, wreaked havoc in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, three persons lost their lives due to rain related incidents and three have been injured. The government also said that 26 cattle had also died in the storm.

A total of 101 houses, including thatched huts and tiled houses were damaged by the cyclone, the Tamil Nadu government said.


About 380 trees were uprooted by Nivar and 14 acres of banana plantation was also damaged. On its way, the cyclone damaged several houses, uprooted trees and power lines in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore, Marakkanam and in Puducherry districts.

At Marakkanam near Puducherry, several power poles fell down and the fishermen community have requested the Tamil Nadu government to restore the power lines at the earliest.


About 2.27 lakh persons have been housed in 3,085 relief camps.

Similarly in Andhra Pradesh, normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 30 cm battered at least half of the state under the influence of cyclone Nivar, leaving one dead.


Another person, a farmer, is feared to have been washed away while NDRF personnel rescued two others from a reservoir in Chittoor district.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority, the SPS at Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa, Krishna, Prakasam and East Godavari districts received heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at more than 177 places.

Tirumala Hills, the abode of Lord Venkateswara, has been receiving incessant rain since Wednesday, causing a lot of hardship to hundreds of devotees stranded there.

Around 1,200 National Disaster Response Force personnel have been stationed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
