Bhubaneswar: The Indian Railways on Saturday issued a clarification on media reports that provision of issuing waitlisted tickets will be discontinued.
In a statement, the Indian Railways stated that, "Efforts are being made to increase the capacity to make berths available on demand. This would reduce the possibility of passengers getting waitlisted. There is no plan do away with the provision of issuing waitlisted tickets."
Such clarification comes in the backdrop of certain media reports which suggested that Railways has claimed that there would be no waiting list with effect from 2024 and only confirmed tickets would be available.
The Indian Railways want to clarify that wait list is a provision that remains whenever the demand for travelers in a given train is more than the number of berths or seats available.
"The provision is not being done away. Waitlist is a provision which acts as a buffer to mitigate the fluctuations in demand and availability," The Indian Railways said in the statement.
Earlier it was reported by some sections in the media that the Indian Railways in its National Rail Plan aims to provide confirmed rail tickets to every passengers implying that there will be no waitlisted tickets.
As per official sources, the National Rail Plan will be a common platform for all future infrastructural, business and financial planning of the Railways. The Indian Railways aim to finalise the Final plan by January 2021.
Objective: The Draft National Rail plan aims to create capacity ahead of demand by 2030, which in turn would cater to growth in demand right up to 2050 and also increase the modal share of Railways from 27% currently to 45% in freight by 2030 as part of a national commitment to reduce Carbon emission and to continue to sustain it. Net Zero Carbon emission by 2030.
