Rehan Khan, Tabrej Alam, Sayed Jamal Ur Rehman and Akash Kumar were arrested from Kalkaji, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) BS Jaiswal, adding that 53 passports, 9 mobile phones and a large quantity of incriminatory items were seized from them.
The gang came on police radar after Amad Ali Ansari from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh and Vijay Kishore Joshi from Almora in Uttrakhand filed a complaint on November 21 about an online advertisement given by a Delhi-based company for employment in Malaysia as computer operator, he said.
On contacting on the telephone numbers given in the advertisement, the complainants were informed that they would have to undergo interviews before selection. They were also asked to deposit academic certificates, passport and Rs 5,000 for medical examination, the official said.
"Later, the complainants also deposited Rs 65,000 each for their visas. They were informed that after 30-45 days, they would receive their ticket, visa and passport from the head office in Mumbai.
"When the complainants did not receive any document till the due date, they visited the company's office at Katwaria Sarai village in New Delhi and found it closed. The company officials had also switched off their mobile phones," he said.
A case was registered at the Vasant Vihar police station.
The accused have confessed to their crime, he said.
"They disclosed to have cheated various people in different states by adopting the same modus operandi. So far, 29 complainants from 12 different states have come forward," said Jaiswal.
