Bhubaneswar: The polling officials and the central security forces deployed for the conduct of by-elections have been brought under the purview of the COVID19 compensation scheme if they lose their lives to the virus during the conduct of elections.

As per a notification issued by the Election Commission, the family of the polling officials and the central security forces will be paid Rs 30 lakh assistance in the case of their death due to COVID-19.

Not only the polling officials, but the engineers of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) assisting the bypolls have been brought under the same umbrella too. Their families will also become eligible to receive the assistance.

Besides, the families of polling officials will also get assistance due to death on account of violence, extremist attack, bomb blast or landmine blast during election duty.

In Odisha, bypolls are being conducted for Balasore Sadar and Tirtol Assembly constituencies on November 3. The bypolls have been necessitated following the demise of sitting BJP MLA Madan Mohan Dutta ( Balasore) and sitting BJD legislator Bishnu Das (Tirtol).
