"Builder Ketan Shan, whose firm was involved in the construction of the 22-storey La Sonarisa building, was arrested last night on charges of 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder)," Sunil Deshmukh, senior inspector at Matunga police station told PTI.
Shah was produced before a local court today which remanded him in police custody till January 13.
Police told the court that they wanted Shah`s custody to find out who installed the lift and who was maintaining it.
However, Shah`s lawyer Laxman Kanal argued that his client`s custody was not required as he had given Occupancy Certificate in 2009.
"My client is in no way responsible for collapse of the lift," Kanal said.
Kanal argued that charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was not applicable in the case and if any charge was there, that would be of death due to negligence.
Hearing arguments from both the side, the court allowed the custody of Shah for three days to police.
Meanwhile, one more contract labourer succumbed to injures in the civic run Sion hospital today, police said.
Yesterday, five labourers were killed in the incident.
