"We have come here with the message of peace. We want the flames of violence to be doused and for the people to unite," veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Bhumidhar Barman said. Barman said the violence in the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bongaigaon and Dhubri has brought a bad name to the state.
"We have to work together to defuse the situation. The Chief Minister and assembly Speaker have also conveyed this message," he said. Another delegate and MLA of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Abdur Rahim Khan said the lower Assam belt has witnessed such incidents earlier also and this should not be repeated.
"We do not want politics to come into this. We do not want the situation to deteriorate further and be like in the 1990s when such incidents had taken place resulting in massive loss to life and property," Khan said.
Congress MLA Bhupen Bora said a major priority is to ensure proper facilities in shelter camps. "A major concern is to ensure that proper arrangements are made for the displaced and how to ensure safety and security of the victims," he said.
