Odisha Elections 2024 Phase 2 Voting LIVE Updates: 60.72 % voter turnout recorded

Voting was held for five Lok Sabha constituencies and as many as 35 Assembly seats in Odisha. An approximate voter turnout of 60.72 per cent was reported as of 7.45 pm. Polling is being held in four phases in Odisha. As per the announcement by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the polling process began on time and it continued throughout the day until the evening. The fate of candidates contesting for five Lok Sabha constituencies- Aska, Bargarh, Bolangir, Kandhamal, and Sundargarh-and 35 Assembly constituencies have been sealed in the voting machines. As many as 265 candidates were in the fray in 35 Assembly constituencies in phase 2 of Odisha Elections 2024.

Polling teams detained

Polling teams of 2 booths were detained by villagers at Loisinga Saragada school in Bolangir over allegations of voting by some people after the stipulated timing. Following the incident, there was palpable tension in the village. The additional SP reached the spot to take stock of the situation. 

Similarly, villagers allegedly locked up the polling team inside a booth after being unable to cast votes in booth-149 in Darlipali village in Sundargarh.

Lathi-charge, blank firing at polling booth

 Tension flared up at booth no-28 at Maheswarpinda under the Kantamal Assembly segment of Boudh district after the voters staged a demonstration as they allegedly could not cast their votes. The situation snowballed into a face-off between the miffed voters and the police. In a bid to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control, the police resorted to lathi-charge and blank firing.

Odisha has overtaken West Bengal in terms of poll violence, alleged BJP leader Samir Mohanty. He also accused a BJD leader of distributing cash in Sarsara area in Bargarh while a BJP worker, Biswanath Mirdha was murdered near the booth. 
At the same time, exuding confidence, Odisha BJP spokesperson Jatin Mohanty said his party will win all 5 Lok Sabha seats and 25 out of 35 Assembly seats that went to polls today

Odisha’s shortest woman votes

The shortest woman of Odisha, Binita Seth cast her vote at Sakhi Booth in Bolangir’s Patnagarh on Monday. 

Voters of five Parliamentary seats - Bargarh, Sundargarh, Bolangir, Kandhamal and Aska - turned up enthusiastically at their booths. One such enthusiastic voter was Binita Seth of Patnagarh. She expressed her happiness after casting her vote. 
“There were facilities for me. I stood on a chair to cast the vote. It gave me immense pleasure. Compared to the last election, the arrangements were better this time,” she said. 

Binita is 47 years old and her height is 1.5 feet.

Tension grips polling booth in Rourkela

Tension flared up at Gopabandhupali High School in Rourkela. While voting was underway at the booth set up in the school, BJD’s MLA candidate for Rourkela Assembly seat Sarada Nayak attempted to enter the booth with his workers. People opposed him, leading to exchange of words between Nayak and the miffed people.

Odisha records 60.55 per cent voter turnout till 5 pm

A voter turnout of 60.55 per cent was recorded till 5 pm on Monday in five Lok Sabha constituencies in Odisha. 

As per the poll authorities, Bargarh recorded the highest voter turnout at 66.14 per cent, followed by Sundargarh at 61.53 per cent, Bolangir at 61.35 per cent, Kandhamal at 57.46 per cent and Aska at 55.65 per cent.

Four injured as two booth agents exchange blows in Bhanjanagar

Four persons were injured when agents of the BJD and BJP allegedly scuffled over facilitating elderly voters to cast their votes at the Berianbadi booth in Mandaliturum village under the Bhanjanagar Assembly constituency. The injured include an elderly woman, an elderly man and two youths.

Odisha records 21 per cent voter turnout till 11 am

Around 21% voter turnout was recorded in Odisha till 11 am for five Lok Sabha constituencies and 35 Assembly segments. Polling began at 7 am in Aska, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Bolangir, and Sundergarh parliamentary constituencies.

Chief Electoral Officer N B Dhal said the polling was peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incident till 11 am.

Polling for five Lok Sabha constituencies and 35 assembly seats in Odisha began amid tight security on Monday, officials said. Voting started at 7 am in Aska, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Bargarh, and Sundargarh parliamentary constituencies, covering 35 assembly segments. About 79.69 lakh voters are eligible to vote at 9,162 booths across 7,339 locations. Polling will continue till 6 pm, with earlier closing times in remote and Maoist-affected areas.

Chief Electoral Officer N B Dhal confirmed that 40 candidates are contesting the five Lok Sabha seats, and 265 are vying for the assembly segments. Notable candidates include Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, six Odisha ministers, BJP MPs Sangeeta Singh Deo and Jual Oram, and former hockey captain Dilip Tirkey.
