President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday addressed a joint sitting of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, marking the onset of the Budget Session of Parliament. While addressing the joint session, the President recounted her government’s achievements. Hailing the government for its initiatives like Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India, she said that these initiatives are now the strengths of India. Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the interim budget in the Parliament today. The Budget Session is scheduled to end on February 9.

    Tax rates, GDP & Fiscal Deficit

    Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed to retain same tax rates for direct and indirect taxes including import duties.

    "The revised estimate of the fiscal deficit is 5.8% of GDP, improving on the budget estimate notwithstanding moderation in the nominal growth estimates," said the FM.

    "The fiscal deficit in 2024-25 is estimated to be 5.1% of GDP," she said.
