Budget Session 2024 LIVE updates: Capex outlay for next year increased by 11.1%, says FM Nirmala Sitharaman

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday addressed a joint sitting of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, marking the onset of the Budget Session of Parliament. While addressing the joint session, the President recounted her government’s achievements. Hailing the government for its initiatives like Make in India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India, she said that these initiatives are now the strengths of India. Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the interim budget in the Parliament today. The Budget Session is scheduled to end on February 9.

'Maternal and child health care' in Union Budget 2024

Tax rates, GDP & Fiscal Deficit

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed to retain same tax rates for direct and indirect taxes including import duties.

"The revised estimate of the fiscal deficit is 5.8% of GDP, improving on the budget estimate notwithstanding moderation in the nominal growth estimates," said the FM.

"The fiscal deficit in 2024-25 is estimated to be 5.1% of GDP," she said.

FDI is 'First Develop India'... FDI inflow during 2014 to 2023 was Rs 596 billion US dollars, marking a golden era. This was twice the FDI inflow between 2005 to 2014. For sustained FDI, we are negotiating bilateral investment treaties with foreign partners," said the FM.

She further said, "Many growth and development-enabling reforms are needed in the state for realising the vision of Viksit Bharat. A provision of Rs 75,000 Crores as a 50-year interest-free loan is proposed this year to support those milestone-linked reforms by the state governments."
